Die Hochschwabgruppe is a range of Austrian Alps.
Elevation data for successive, parallel lines
define the heights of cardstock strips, thus
creating a sort of terrain map of the region.
The strips are mounted on a diagonal,
to avoid seeing through the "slats."
Blue and white LEDs illuminate the strips from both the front
and the back.
Separate switches on each lighting element allow the viewer
to set different lighting effects or intensities,
whether an interior glow or something more akin
to low-angle evening light.
This piece refines some of my ideas from Denali,
but incorporates the lighting within the frame of the piece.
Yet more-recent works have adopted curved geometries for the paper,
to prevent it from sagging over time.
